RULES

Time limit

Films submitted for the Horizon Film Festival should have a length appropriate for the style of film submitted and should not exceed 10 minutes.

The Horizon Film Festival is an event hosted by the Burton School District, and as such all films must adhere to a G or PG rating as designated by the Motion Picture Association of America's film rating classifications. Films which show or make reference to drugs, alcohol, weapons, violence profanity, or sexual content will be denied entry into the Horizon Film Festival.

The Horizon Film Festival aims to offer a professional creative experience for students in the Burton School District, and as such entries are held to industry standards. Copyrighted material is not allowed in entries except in the instance the material falls under fair use. If a submission uses copyrighted material with permission from its original author, the student should contact both the video production teacher at their school site as well as Irene Ortega at irene.ortega@burtonschools.org with evidence of their permission.

penalties

If a film submission breaches one of the Horizon Film Festival submission rules, the student who submitted the work will be notified by email at the earliest possible date. Once notified, the student will have the opportunity to submit a new version of their film or be disqualified from the film festival. 

FAQ

how do i know if i won?

Winners will be announced at the 2025 Horizon Film Festival on May 1 at Galaxy Theaters. Students who were nominated for a submission will be notified by letter and email one week in advance on April 24. 

how many times can i enter?

All students are encouraged to enter as many films as they would like. There are no restrictions on the quantity of submissions.

will my film be shown at the festival?

If your film is selected as one of the seven winners, it will be shown on the big screen at Galaxy 9 Theater. Films which were nominated have a chance of winning in their respective category.

how big can my team be?

There is no official limit for team sizes, however a maximum of six students is encouraged to ensure fair recognition during the event. Teams with many participants may be asked to share awards given.
